There are posters all over the town advertising a meeting of the Communist Party.Subject “Save Britain – by opening a Second Front Now.”

Although not much to do with Colchester, the Russian demand for a second front(which had already been presented to the Allies in 1941) was strengthened by the affirmation by the USA in the summer of 1942 that "we expect the formation of a Second Front this year" ("The Struggle for Europe" by Chester Wilmot, Ch.5). Evidently the Russians used all means available to create public approval for this in the UK. In fact, of course, two years had to elapse before the landing in Normandy was possible.
