Wednesday
Up early. High
clouds, but much warmer than yesterday.
As I went up East Hill, the sun began to break through. The Rector of St James came out of the
Rectory in cassock and biretta, and hurried up the hill to church, his
surplice over his arm.
Outside, staff hanging about nearly all day, because there
is no petrol. Everybody very fed up.
Poulter told me that Benton [of the Essex Archaeological Society] had told him that Hull was instructed to warn us that we were
to receive notice to quit. He has said
nothing.
