When Rudsdale left the Museum to work for the War Agricultural Committee in 1941 he was earning £150 a year (under £4 a week) and he felt he could not return for less than £4 a week in 1944 after gaining a wage of £5 a week for the War Agricultural Committee.

Museum staff were generally underpaid in this period and the Museums Association complained in 1938 that an Assistant Curator post at Reading Museum was advertised at £3 a week, when the same wage was being paid to Reading's dustmen.

Nevertheless, in comparison with manual workers at the time, Rudsdale was earning a better wage than many.

Thanks again and best wishes, CatherineE J Rudsdalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11884606063821044751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4841718718195447808.post-56959978260361907572014-09-18T10:17:39.524+01:002014-09-18T10:17:39.524+01:00Catherine
For the record current values of ER'...Catherine

For the record current values of ER's discussion of his wages at the museum etc.

£4 = £158.94 a week
£5 = £198.67 a week

He says he left the museum at £150 a year, but at £4 a week this would be £208! So again for the record

£150 = £5,960.12 a year
£208 = £8,264.69 a year
£260 = £10,330.87 a year

Which now doesn't seem that well paid, but at the time was.

Mike DennisAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
